Project Tomahawk
FTI's 2004 Pontiac GTO Buildup
Phase II
Phase I | Phase III

The second phase of Project Tomahawk took place at the same place as our first, New England Dragway in New Hampshire. Because of the rain that just dissipated, the track would only allow 1/8 mile testing this day. After the typical 125 mile trip and a short cool down, I got down to business.

First Pass with 19 psi in the Nittos, decent burn out, idle launch.
60: 2.017
330: 5.776
1/8: 8.831
MPH: 80.56
A nice drop in ET from the first test!

Second pass with a 40 minute cool down, 20 psi in the Nittos, no burn out - dry hops only, slight brake loading.
60: 2.033
330: 5.817
1/8: 8.880
MPH: 80.71
This car needs a torque converter BAD!
Third Pass with a 42 minute cool down. Everything else remained the same.
60: 2.038
330: 5.821
1/8: 8.887
MPH: 80.72
Obviously doesn't like to be preloaded on the stock converter.
Nice bracket car though...
Fourth Pass with a 1 Hour 10 minute cool down, 18 psi in the Nittos, no burn out - dry hops only, idle launch .
60: 2.051
330: 5.834
1/8: 8.899
MPH: 80.47
Needs some tire spin. Dead hooked and almost stalled.
Fifth Pass with a 1 hour 10 minute cool down, 25 psi in the Nittos, no burn out - dry hops only, idle launch .
60: 2.046
330: 5.802
1/8: 8.845
MPH: 80.85
Seems to like 25 psi except for a slight hop on initial launch! Need to get some race shocks to allow for some adjustability.
Sixth and last pass of the day in 100% street trip (Coolers and tools in the trunk).
35 minute cool down, 35 psi in the Nittos, no burn out - dry hops only, idle launch.
60: 2.101
330: 5.899
1/8: 8.962
MPH: 80.80
Spun...
The results were not too bad considering the minor modifications that were done to the car compared to the first test.

1) Well-used Nitto Drag Radials (Stock OEM size)
2) Home-made 4 inch inlet pipe (Plastic for now but aluminum in the works)
3) K&N Conical filter (fits like a glove on top of the stock air box)
4) Moroso Ultra 40 Wires (having a GTO specific set made custom)

These contributed to a drop in the 1/8 mile ET by .15 seconds and increased the 1/8 MPH by 1.5 mph.

This thing definitely needs two more items before I go back!

1) LS1 Edit to get rid of the stupid torque management system!
2) A serious torque converter!

I sell Dynamic, ATI and TCI so we'll see who'll help me out with the "project" car.
Bet the six speed guys will have a real race then! Figure a low to mid 13 pass (or quicker) with some more tricks????
