Project Tomahawk FTI's 2004 Pontiac GTO Buildup Phase III Phase I | Phase II |
The next phase of Project Tomahawk has been started and here's a rundown of some of the changes. |
Cylinder Heads |
Air Flow Research 205 Mongoose Heads These are the benchmark for others to follow. Though we were tempted, the ports were left as delivered from AFR. This way we can provide AFR with real data on their performance. Our GTO customer packages have provided well over 400RWHP with these. A few "changes" were done to match our little project's goals: Decks were milled .020" for a little more compression. Valve springs were swapped for our Gen4 spring package. Titanium retainers and "super seven" locks added. Viton valve seals were used to control the oil up top. These are a great cylinder head package!
|
Precision Industries The people at PI definitely came through for our GTO project. This purple wonder will help our two ton car launch super hard and provide some very quick elapsed times. Per Vicky's recommendations, we will install a TransGo shift kit for a more positive and firmer shift from our 4L60 trans. A B&M trans fluid cooler, with thermostatically controlled fan will help keep things at the proper temps for consistant performance. We'll be adding a cast aluminum deep sump TCI transmission pan as well as a trans temp gauge in the next installment. When we get into some quicker ET's, an SFI flexplate and possibly a shield will be required.

Kooks Custom Headers
These are the guys we have used in our heads-up racing Mustangs so a call was made to New York for the "tubes". After some discussion, Nick recommended just stepping up to the 1-7/8 primaries since the car was going to be more race than street. Rather than use the standard GTO ball-mount colector, we opted for the race style slip to mate with the three inch exhaust. With a bigger horsepower engine in the works, we listened to Nick.
|
Flowmaster and Flowtech Exhaust The new engine will need big exhaust so it made sense to start with the system we were going to end up with anyway. The mufflers are the baddest things you'll ever see. Flowmaster has these designed strictly for racing applications but since we loved them on our 'stangs. we had to use them. The "X-pipe" is a universal kit that we'll modify to fit the GTO. It will definitely not be a bolt in but I have faith in the team.
Off to the Dyno |
Loaded and ready to boogie. Since the Suburban wasn't "trailer ready" I fired up the big bad black Chevy pick up to bring the goat to the dyno. It fit perfectly on the open trailer and all is good!
Off to the Track |
Gettin' close! Once all the new modifications are completed and dialed in, we're off to the real test bed. ...The racetrack! The next phase will have the results.
Hint...
Been a while since the updates... working too much... but the latest results were outstanding.
After a total retune of the car for racetrack conditions, she responded with a best run of 11.731 at 114.8 MPH.
Special thanks to Anthony Barone (Bone) and Dave Cross for all the tuning help. The car sure needed it!
More updates and progress reports coming as time allows...
